Book excerpt: Nate Shaw's father was born under slavery. Nate Shaw was born into a bondage that was only a little gentler. At the age of nine, he was picking cotton for thirty-five cents an hour. At the age of forty-seven, he faced down a crowd of white deputies who had come to confiscate a neighbor's crop. His defiance cost him twelve years in prison. This triumphant autobiography, assembled from the eighty-four-year-old Shaw's oral reminiscences, is the plain-spoken story of an "over-average" man who witnessed wrenching changes in the lives of Southern black people -- and whose unassuming courage helped bring those changes about.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For generations of children, including a young Oprah Winfrey, opening a Lois Lenski book has meant opening a world. This was just what the author wanted: to help children “see beyond the rim of their own world.” In Lois Lenski: Storycatcher, historian and educator Bobbie Malone takes us into Lenski’s own world to tell the story of how a girl from a small Ohio town became a beloved literary icon. Author and illustrator of the Newbery Award–winning Strawberry Girl and numerous other tales of children from America’s diverse regions and cultures, Lenski spent five decades creating stories for young readers. Lois Lenski: Storycatcher follows her development as a writer and as an artist, and it traces the evolution of her passionate belief in the power of empathy conveyed in children’s books. Understanding that youngsters responded instinctively to narratives rich in reality, Lenski turned her extensive study of hardworking families into books that accurately and movingly depicted the lives of the children of sharecroppers, coal miners, and migrant field workers. From Bayou Suzette to Blue Ridge Billy, Corn-Farm Boy to Houseboat Girl, and Boom Town Boy to Texas Tomboy, Lenski’s books mirrored the cultural energy and concerns of the time. This first full-length biography tells how Lenski traveled throughout the country, gathering the stories that brought to life in words and pictures whole worlds that had for so long been invisible in children’s literature. In the process, her work became a source of delight, inspiration, and insight for generations of readers.

Book excerpt: ust as she did in her New York Times Notable debut novel, The Metal Shredders, Nancy Zafris follows a colorful cast of characters into uncharted fictional territory, this time landing in the canyon country of the desert Southwest in 1954. For motivations as straightforward as striking it rich to reasons far more complex and counfounding, they each embark on very personal divergent journeys across an unforgiving countryside, even while their quest to find uranium unites them. By turns meditative and funny, frightening, witty and refreshingly wise, Lucky Strike explores the ways that language simply put can mine the inexpressable. In the process, a young widow and her two children learn much about uranium but even more about the nature of the love that binds them. This is a story to touch your heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Liberty to Magnolia: In Search of the American Dream vividly recounts the journey of an African-American woman from rural, segregated Mississippi through academia, corporate America, and politics. It is the story of how she triumphed even when, more often than not, the ugly realities of racism and sexism tried to deter her. She says, "If it were not for God, my Creator, who endowed me, empowered me, and who has sustained me during this journey, nothing would have been possible. I give thanks every day, often multiple times a day, for the little things as well as those that are significant." This book tells the broader story, too, of how her life epitomizes what Equal Rights have meant and have not meant for blacks and women as she has lived through their maturation during the last 50 years. What better moment than today to look deeply at the life of a woman who prepared herself and worked tirelessly to achieve her goals because she believed in the promise that all citizens have a chance at achieving the American Dream? See how her faith in God helped her achieve her purpose in life. From Liberty to Magnolia shows readers, especially aspiring women and minorities how to navigate and ultimately embrace the challenges at every major crossroads and be triumphant, relying on God every step of the way. A Discussion Guide is included for use by book clubs, classes, and group forums. "An engrossing personal tale." - Kirkus Review In her book, enhanced by family photos, Ellis sets her personal battles within the context of the civil rights and feminist movements, both of which helped fuel her determination. She recounts stories of sexual harassment that are especially relevant in today's #MeToo environment. And the early sections offer striking portraits of segregation, as she recounts cross burnings in front of her house and the murder of a friend's father who was involved in voter registration....an engrossing personal tale.... this account offers an important historical perspective on two continuing struggles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jelline Smith lives with her husband in Decatur, Illinois. The couple has one son and seven grandchildren. She loves the Midwest but longs for her home state of Mississippi. She always said that some day she would return to Mississippi to live, but there was always something to stop her such as a better paying job or a better way of living. The main reason for staying is her family, parents and siblings, living in Decatur. She simply couldn¿t bear the thought of leaving them. The author believes in and loves her family, but her love for God is greater. She gives God the glory for the writing of this book. Although she knows God has brought her a long way, she tries to refrain from the phrase and points to personal motivation. Jelline always knew she wanted to be a writer ever since she was a little girl. She was always making up songs and poems, but nothing ever came of them. Some day, she told herself, she would see her name in print. ¿I will see my dream come true, and people enjoying it as much as I enjoyed writing it,¿ Jelline said. A friend once told her if she ever wrote a book to make sure it was about something she knew because it takes more to write about something you don¿t know about than it takes to write about what you know. Jelline said her childhood was what she knew best.

Book excerpt: The "innocence lost" - never to be regained - by America's youth during the Vietnam War lies strewn across America's landscape in the form of shattered lives and minds. We were sent there by U.S. government officials who played recklessly with our young lives; however, we did not know to what extent at the time. Maybe we still don't. But, we do know that for them, our so-called leaders, politics came first, and our welfare - our very lives - came second. We also know that very little was reported about that war during the period November 22, 1963, to August 5, 1964. John B. Givhan was there during that time, and he details early helicopter assault missions flown by courageous U.S. Army helicopter pilots, crew chiefs and gunners - their living and their dying. This is also about April 12, 1964, in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, a day that is and will be forever etched in the minds and souls of the men of the 120th Aviation Company, the "Deans", when valor and devotion to duty reigned supreme - and whose innocence was lost!

This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about me! My life! Not my sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, or any one elses just mine. This book is not to offend anyone, find fault with anyone, but to be of help to someone. Its the way I saw things and the things that happened to me. This is a true account of my life as it unfolded day after day month after month and year after year. The things that happened to me as a child, I had no controll over, I was only five years old when I started recalling these things. This is not a pretty story, but never the less a true one. Some of the things I did are not very pleasing to read but I found that I should get them out into the opening for the healing of my life to take place. The words might be of help to someone else. If you ever find yourself in a situation like mine you will know that you are not the only one and that there are many, many people in this world, who carries the same kind tourture on their shoulders. I hope the book will help them get throught the pain, and suffering in their lives. I was embrassed and just plain ashamed for over twenty years myself. In 1995-96 I facilitated a small drug prevention class called (Project Charlie) Chemical Abuse Resolutions Lies in Education. While instructing this class I learned much better how to enjoy my life as it is right now. I learned to be honest with myself. I realized that I had nothing to hide and I made up my mind to share with the world some of the things that had influenced me to do the things that I did. I was inspired to write this true story of my life one day as I was talking to the class about being ashamed and afraid.. Through some of these experiences I learned a valuable lesson, something I will never forget. I know now that no matter how hard life seems to be treating you, you can raise above all your doubts and fears and change your own destiny; and become happy in this life. I say to you if there has been anything in your life to bound you down, cripple you, and stop you from living a good and desent life get rid of it, get it off of your shoulder, dont let it get the best of you, chew it up and spit it out, so you can live a regret free life existence. I was born Alice Fay Joy Young in Henderson (Rusk County) Texas, December 1st. 1944, to a Mr. and Mrs. Henry (Blue) and Corene Young. My mother called me (Titty). My siblings called me Fay. I never liked the name Fay. I dont know why but I never did. Mom said she called me Titty because she was so sick when I was born. She births me while going through metaphase. I was lucky to be born at that time of her life. I couldnt nurse her breast and I was allergic to cows milk, so she had to make me what she called a sugar tit. She had to make it with malted milk. I never did find out how she got that milk, I did wonder from time to time (when she was telling me about my life) how we could afford it; being as poor as we were. I was the last child of thirteen. Her last little curly haired baby girl. (Shed often stated so affectionally). I had a head full of sandy colored curly hair, very light skin, brown eyes and I had my thumb and pointer finger in my mouth when I came out. I know this to be true because, I sucked those two fingers until I was about fifteen years old. I sometimes now curl my thumb and pointer up and put them into my mouth just to see what I got out of them, but they just dont taste the way they did then.

Their lives spanned a time period from aEURoehorse and buggyaEUR days to the jet age and space exploration. However, the way they lived didn't change very much as the modern world was evolving around them. Throughout their productive years, they stuck to the old ways of surviving by being self-sufficient in a rural, agricultural environment. Their roots had not prepared them for aEURoegetting byaEUR in other ways. Even in the 1950s, they were still manually doing farm work when machines had replaced people and horses all around them. So many times, one day ended with no clear conviction that the next one wouldn't bring problems beyond their capabilities. How they managed to survive from day to day and year to year on the meager fruits of their labors and raise a family in the process is an outstanding example in human integrity and industry. They survived, though, and held their heads high to the end. Theirs is a story worth telling.

Book excerpt: "Nellie M. Thompson has thrived even before she learned to read at the age of 88. A descendent of Chief Pushmataha ... her powerful memoir tells of growing up as a Choctaw Indian in the small-town Midwest of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, and eventually California in the late 1940s. Her faith in God was shaped after she was healed of polio by an Indian medicine man at the age of eight-- this experience dictated her personal commitment to a lifetime of service. She herself became an Indian Medicine woman treating human ailments with herbs and Indian techniques. This inspiring account of a Choctaw Indian woman, whose courage and faith in God move her through many difficult trials, weaves memorable anecdotes into a fresh, first-hand perspective of her history and culture."--Provided by publisher.

This book was released on 2019-02-08 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his autobiography, Mark Twain stated, "In the small town of Hannibal, Missouri, when I was a boy, everybody was poor but didn't know it, and everybody was comfortable and did know it." This comment certainly applied to Cleburne, Texas, where Reed grew up from the mid-1940s through the 1950s. At least this was true on his side of town, northeast Cleburne across the Santa Fe railroad tracks. He lived on Sabine Street, and it was still just graveled even when he graduated from high school in 1959. Just about everybody on his street still had outdoor johns even then. Reed has been writing bimonthly articles for his hometown newspaper, the Cleburne Times-Review, since 2016, detailing the zany escapades, ludicrous stunts, and laughable situations he would place himself in from time to time as regular as clockwork. Mix a gullible youngster with a prankster of an uncle and a daredevil father, and anything goes. The incidents were many: a broken arm from falling off a donkey that his Uncle O. B. placed him on, a sore head from attempting to butt down a door after drinking what his uncle said was goat's milk, being put in a jail cell at the age of twelve for stealing a thirty-five-cent wheel bearing for his bicycle, proving pathetic both as a fighter and a football player, he and two friends smoking an entire carton of Luckies in two and a half hours. The list is interminable. Unfortunately, as he grew older, he really did not outgrow this "propensity for absurdity" but continued to demonstrate it on a frequent basis as his family would agree .

Book excerpt: My encouraging words to my readers and their parents: I sincerely wrote this true story of my childhood life that I may be able to encourage a child or a parent to write about their childhood experiences. Especially if there is something that might be troubling to them. I had a very adventurous childhood with my parents, siblings, and friends. All I wanted to do was please my parents. My personal advice to children of all ages is to talk and ask your parents questions. Write about your experiences, listen and pray to God about it, and my advice to parents is to always take time out with your child, never be too busy to hear what your child has to say. Remember when you spend time together, you are shaping your child's life and developing a good lifelong relationship. Be your child's role model.
