Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A painter, sculptor, and printmaker, Honor&é Daumier (1808&–1879) was one of the most prolific and important artists of nineteenth-century France. He played a leading role in shaping the new realism brought to the portrayal of everyday life, but he is now best known for the thousands of caricatures he published in magazines and newspapers such as Le Charivari, a daily with satirical articles and a wide circulation. Musical Notes by Honor&é Daumier, which accompanied an exhibition of prints from the Collection of Egon and Belle Gartenberg, focuses on Daumier's vivid records of the musical life of Paris. Although not himself a musician, Daumier had a keen interest in the amateur practice of the art as well as in grand opera and the celebrated performers and composers of his day. Hector Berlioz, Franz Liszt, Gioacchino Rossini, and Niccol&ò Paganini are among the &"greats&" lampooned in the lithographs in Musical Notes by Honor&é Daumier. Other prints offer satirical glimpses into the music making of everyday Parisians&—from squawking clarinets to flirtatious piano teachers and straining tenors. In these lithographs, as in most of the prints Daumier produced during his long career, he discloses the foibles and follies of a society facing rapid changes in its cultural norms.

Book excerpt: Through music, we are brought together and we can gain a better understanding of people from all corners of the Earth. We call this series “I Don’t Read Music” since we are targeting beginners of all ages: children, teens, parents, and grandparents. This book includes 54 popular, rhythmic, and easy-to-play folk songs and melodies from all over the world. Since this book is aimed at the absolute beginner without any knowledge of reading music, we do not use the classical music staff and do not show the note duration. Each song here is written without classic musical notation but only with circles and numbered notes inside. First of all, we recommend following the QR-code which you will find on each page, listening to the song on YouTube, and then trying to repeat what is heard in the recordings. It will help to understand the rhythm pattern and duration. Keep in mind that folk music traditionally is not learned from sheet music or notes. Instead, it is learned by repetition and through being passed from generation to generation. We believe in this method of teaching, which is easier and more enjoyable. For learning purposes, all songs have been simplified and adapted especially for kalimba. Most songs have been transposed for one octave. So you can use an 8-note kalimba, but if you want to play all 54 songs, you should have a 10- or 17-note kalimba. Getting to know music from around the world can be one of the most exciting and appealing ways to be introduced to new and different cultures. Music is a universal language, meaning that it transcends borders and opens up an entirely new way of thinking. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today’s world, with an increase in the breadth and scope of real-world engineering optimization problems as well as with the advent of big data, improving the performance and efficiency of algorithms for solving such problems has become an indispensable need for specialists and researchers. In contrast to conventional books in the field that employ traditional single-stage computational, single-dimensional, and single-homogeneous optimization algorithms, this book addresses multiple newfound architectures for meta-heuristic music-inspired optimization algorithms. These proposed algorithms, with multi-stage computational, multi-dimensional, and multi-inhomogeneous structures, bring about a new direction in the architecture of meta-heuristic algorithms for solving complicated, real-world, large-scale, non-convex, non-smooth engineering optimization problems having a non-linear, mixed-integer nature with big data. The architectures of these new algorithms may also be appropriate for finding an optimal solution or a Pareto-optimal solution set with higher accuracy and speed in comparison to other optimization algorithms, when feasible regions of the solution space and/or dimensions of the optimization problem increase. This book, unlike conventional books on power systems problems that only consider simple and impractical models, deals with complicated, techno-economic, real-world, large-scale models of power systems operation and planning. Innovative applicable ideas in these models make this book a precious resource for specialists and researchers with a background in power systems operation and planning. Provides an understanding of the optimization problems and algorithms, particularly meta-heuristic optimization algorithms, found in fields such as engineering, economics, management, and operations research; Enhances existing architectures and develops innovative architectures for meta-heuristic music-inspired optimization algorithms in order to deal with complicated, real-world, large-scale, non-convex, non-smooth engineering optimization problems having a non-linear, mixed-integer nature with big data; Addresses innovative multi-level, techno-economic, real-world, large-scale, computational-logical frameworks for power systems operation and planning, and illustrates practical training on implementation of the frameworks using the meta-heuristic music-inspired optimization algorithms.

Book excerpt: At first glance, mathematics and music seem to be from separate worlds—one from science, one from art. But in fact, the connections between the two go back thousands of years, such as Pythagoras’s ideas about how to quantify changes of pitch for musical tones (musical intervals). Mathematics and Music: Composition, Perception, and Performance explores the many links between mathematics and different genres of music, deepening students’ understanding of music through mathematics. In an accessible way, the text teaches the basics of reading music and explains how various patterns in music can be described with mathematics. The authors extensively use the powerful time-frequency method of spectrograms to analyze the sounds created in musical performance. Numerous examples of music notation assist students in understanding basic musical scores. The text also provides mathematical explanations for musical scales, harmony, and rhythm and includes a concise introduction to digital audio synthesis. Along with helping students master some fundamental mathematics, this book gives them a deeper appreciation of music by showing how music is informed by both its mathematical and aesthetic structures. Web Resource On the book’s CRC Press web page, students can access videos of many of the spectrograms discussed in the text as well as musical scores playable with the free music software MuseScore. An online bibliography offers many links to free downloadable articles on math and music. The web page also provides links to other websites related to math and music, including all the sites mentioned in the book.
