Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From starry-eyed fans with dreams of fame to cotton entrepreneurs turned movie moguls, the Bombay film industry has historically energized a range of practices and practitioners, playing a crucial and compelling role in the life of modern India. Bombay Hustle presents an ambitious history of Indian cinema as a history of material practice, bringing new insights to studies of media, modernity, and the late colonial city. Drawing on original archival research and an innovative transdisciplinary approach, Debashree Mukherjee offers a panoramic portrait of the consolidation of the Bombay film industry during the talkie transition of the 1920s–1940s. In the decades leading up to independence in 1947, Bombay became synonymous with marketplace thrills, industrial strikes, and modernist experimentation. Its burgeoning film industry embodied Bombay’s spirit of “hustle,” gathering together and spewing out the many different energies and emotions that characterized the city. Bombay Hustle examines diverse sites of film production—finance, pre-production paperwork, casting, screenwriting, acting, stunts—to show how speculative excitement jostled against desires for scientific management in an industry premised on the struggle between contingency and control. Mukherjee develops the concept of a “cine-ecology” in order to examine the bodies, technologies, and environments that collectively shaped the production and circulation of cinematic meaning in this time. The book thus brings into view a range of marginalized film workers, their labor and experiences; forgotten film studios, their technical practices and aesthetic visions; and overlooked connections among media practices, geographical particularities, and historical exigencies.

Alex Rodriguez. Tobey Maguire. Ben Affleck. Matt Damon. John Cassavetes. What do these people have in common? Not just fame and fortune; all these men are also alumni of the ultra-exclusive, high-stakes poker ring that inspired Aaron Sorkin’s Oscar-nominated film, Molly’s Game. But Houston Curtis, the card shark who co-founded the game with Tobey Maguire, knows that Sorkin’s is the whitewashed version. In Billion Dollar Hollywood Heist, Curtis goes all-in, revealing the true story behind the game. From its origins with Maguire to staking DiCaprio’s first game, installing Molly Bloom, avoiding the hookers and blow down the hall, and weathering the FBI investigation that left Curtis with a lien on his house, this is the no-holds-barred account of the world’s most exclusive Texas Hold ’Em game from the man who started it—with all the names and salacious details that Molly’s Game left out. With the insider appeal of Rounders, more A-listers than Ocean’s 11, and the excitement of The Sting, Billion Dollar Hollywood Heist is the untold, insider’s story that makes Molly’s Game look tame.

Permanent stars of the tabloids. And the wickedest, most devilish lovers around... This set includes the complete Fontaines series plus special bonuses! THE SWEET TASTE OF SIN (BOOK 1): To the rest of the world, Dante Fontaine is the ridiculously attractive oldest son of the Fontaine family. To Ashlyn? He’s the guy who made her swear off men forever. She just wants to run her bakery, heal her broken heart, and forget him. Buy Dante has other plans, and this time, he has no intention of letting her go… THE LIES BETWEEN THE LINES (BOOK 2): Emilia Torres has everything she’s ever wanted. After years of struggling to become an actress, she’s finally caught her big break—a part opposite the hottest star in Hollywood, the gorgeous and charming Luca Fontaine. But her biggest role might be the one she plays off-screen, where she and Luca pretend to be in love. The rules for their relationship are simple: in front of the paparazzi, they play the perfect Hollywood couple. In private, their contract states that all feelings—and sex—are absolutely forbidden. But what if the truth becomes hotter than the lies? THE MYSTERY OF YOU (BOOK 3): When Edie Marshall meets a mysterious—and drop-dead gorgeous—man in the woods just outside her small town, she has no idea that he’s actually Rafe Fontaine, certified bad boy and black sheep of the Fontaine family. And she definitely has no idea that their brief, passionate encounter will lead to her getting pregnant. Can she trust her heart—and her baby—to Hollywood’s hottest bad boy? THE THRILL OF TEMPTATION (BOOK 4): Maggie Blankenship is a hot mess—broke, unemployed, and down on her luck. So when she’s offered the chance to fill in as an extra in a movie, she wonders if her luck is changing. It turns out that the movie is being directed by Orlando Fontaine—the intense and mysterious youngest brother of the Fontaine family. Sparks (and underwear) fly between the pair of them from the start, but Orlando has a strict no-fraternizing policy on his sets. As the heat builds between Maggie and Orlando, only one question remains—what’s the cost of giving in to temptation? Plus TWO special bonuses: THE SECRET TO SEDUCTION (full-length prequel): Felicia Liddle has eight days to seduce one of the notorious Fontaine brothers. The only problem? Historically speaking, Felicia's way more likely to put her foot in her mouth (or generally make an idiot of herself) than charm the pants off of anyone. Enter Roman Everet: media mogul (read: billionaire), insanely sexy, and--oh yeah--Felicia's new boss. He might hold the fate of her job in his hands, but he's more than willing to help her become an expert in seduction... And an EXTENDED BONUS EPILOGUE! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Through the heart of Hollywood cinema runs a surprising current of progressive politics. Sports movies, a genre that has flourished since the mid-seventies, evoke the American dream and represent the nation to itself. Once considered mere credos for Reaganism, on closer view, movies from Rocky (1976) to Ali (2001) dream of democratic participation and recognition more than individual success. In every case, off-field relationships take precedence over on-field competition. Arranged chronologically, this critical study of six major sports films also tells the story of multiculturalism's gradual adoption. The mainstream's first minority heroes are paradoxically white ethnic, rural, working-class men, exemplified by Rocky, Slap Shot (1977) and The Natural (1984); Black, brown, and women characters follow in White Men Can't Jump (1992), A League of Their Own (1992), and Ali. But despite their insistence on community and diversity these popular dramas show limited faith in civic institutions. Hannah Arendt, Jeffrey Alexander, and others inform original analysis and commentary on the political significance of popular culture. Reading these familiar movies from another angle paints a fresh picture of how the United States has imagined democracy since its bicentennial"--

Book excerpt: Introduction to Media Distribution offers a clear, direct and comprehensive overview of the entire film, television and new media distribution business, valuable to both students and professionals. In this book, author Scott Kirkpatrick draws from over a decade of personal experience in the distribution arena to explore what fuels the distribution process, and explains in real-world terms how the business works from beginning to end—not merely what happens to a film or television series after a distributor acquires it, but how distributors develop, pre-sell and broker deals on content before it even exists. Kirkpatrick covers deal structures, release strategies, acquisition approaches, rights sales, international co-productions, tax credits, audience research, global regulatory boards, and even ‘behind closed doors’ monetization practices. The book offers: A straightforward, clear and insightful approach to understanding the fundamental basics of how the global distribution marketplace works, and how distribution companies actually operate and create the content they need; An insider’s analysis of all levels of the business with an emphasis on the independent scene, the root from where development in the industry grows; A comprehensive overview of how film and television markets and festivals work, and how buyers and sellers actually broker deals in the field; Detailed explanations of how each media right is defined and windowed to maximize potential revenue; A detailed overview of several major international territories, and how each operates within the context of the global media business; Guidance and advice from an industry expert on how one can initiate their professional career in the entertainment industry, applicable to individuals in all roles; A robust appendix containing in-depth studies of legal definitions, material delivery requirements, territory-by-territory financial projections, and more. Book excerpt: This biographical dictionary shines the spotlight on several hundred unheralded stunt performers who created some of the cinema’s greatest action scenes without credit or recognition. The time period covered encompasses the silent comedy days of Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd, the early westerns of Tom Mix and John Wayne, the swashbucklers of Douglas Fairbanks, Errol Flynn, and Burt Lancaster, the costume epics of Charlton Heston and Kirk Douglas, and the action films of Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, and Charles Bronson. Without stuntmen and women working behind the scenes the films of these action superstars would not have been as successful. Now fantastic athletes and leading stunt creators such as Yakima Canutt, Richard Talmadge, Harvey Parry, Allen Pomeroy, Dave Sharpe, Jock Mahoney, Chuck Roberson, Polly Burson, Bob Morgan, Loren Janes, Dean Smith, Hal Needham, Martha Crawford, Ronnie Rondell, Terry Leonard, and Bob Minor are given their proper due. Each entry covers the performer’s athletic background, military service, actors doubled, noteworthy stunts, and a rundown of his or her best known screen credits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkably candid biography of the remarkably candid—and brilliant—Carrie Fisher In her 2008 bestseller, Girls Like Us, Sheila Weller—with heart and a profound feeling for the times—gave us a surprisingly intimate portrait of three icons: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon. Now she turns her focus to one of the most loved, brilliant, and iconoclastic women of our time: the actress, writer, daughter, and mother Carrie Fisher. Weller traces Fisher’s life from her Hollywood royalty roots to her untimely and shattering death after Christmas 2016. Her mother was the spunky and adorable Debbie Reynolds; her father, the heartthrob crooner Eddie Fisher. When Eddie ran off with Elizabeth Taylor, the scandal thrust little Carrie Frances into a bizarre spotlight, gifting her with an irony and an aplomb that would resonate throughout her life. We follow Fisher’s acting career, from her debut in Shampoo, the hit movie that defined mid-1970s Hollywood, to her seizing of the plum female role in Star Wars, which catapulted her to instant fame. We explore her long, complex relationship with Paul Simon and her relatively peaceful years with the talent agent Bryan Lourd. We witness her startling leap—on the heels of a near-fatal overdose—from actress to highly praised, bestselling author, the Dorothy Parker of her place and time. Weller sympathetically reveals the conditions that Fisher lived with: serious bipolar disorder and an inherited drug addiction. Still, despite crises and overdoses, her life’s work—as an actor, a novelist and memoirist, a script doctor, a hostess, and a friend—was prodigious and unique. As one of her best friends said, “I almost wish the expression ‘one of a kind’ didn’t exist, because it applies to Carrie in a deeper way than it applies to others.” Sourced by friends, colleagues, and witnesses to all stages of Fisher’s life, Carrie Fisher: A Life on the Edge is an empathic and even-handed portrayal of a woman who—as Princess Leia, but mostly as herself—was a feminist heroine, one who died at a time when we need her blazing, healing honesty more than ever.

Southpaw Harvey Haddix had logged a solid but unspectacular career by the time he took the mound on May 26, 1959. Facing the Milwaukee Braves, he set down the first 36 batters in a row, or 12 innings’ worth—a perfect game three innings longer than the norm. But his Pittsburgh Pirates couldn’t score, either, and Haddix lost in the 13th inning on a controversial play. This book recounts Haddix’s one-of-a-kind performance and describes the official decisions that changed the historical record.
